Centennial Review: Olympic Champion in 1,500m Swimming Won Gold Medal for 10km Marathon Swimming

2018 is a special year, for FINA will celebrate the 110th anniversary of its founding on July 19th! For this special day, FINA will review the important figures, anecdotes, memorial days, etc. of the past century in the next few months.

Oussama Mellouli is a legend inTunisia(and African) sport. After being the first-ever medalist in Swimming for his country at Olympics (Gold in the1500mfree at 2008 Games), he proceeds with a remarkable success story in the10kmMarathon Swimming: bronze in 2008 (first and only swimmer so far to medal in swimming and Marathon Swimming in the same edition of the Game) and gold in London 2012!

While the “modern era” of50mWorld Records in Swimming started in 1957, the25m-pool world record were firstly recognized by FINA in 1991. Presently, the fastest time of the charts belongs to Florent Manaudou (France) in the men’s50mfree (20′26), while the oldest global mark still dates back to July2008 inthe men’s800mfree (Grant Hackett, AUS, 7:23.42)

Sammy Lee fromUSAbecame the first male diver in history to win back-to-back titles in the10mplatform (1948 and 1952). Later, he became the coach of legendary Greg Louganis.

Despite not being presently at the top of the hierarchy inWater Polo,Great Britainhas been a four-time winner of the Olympic competitions: 1900, 1908, 1912 and 1920. In these last three editions, the best British player Paul Radmilovic, who also won a gold medal in1908 inthe 4x200mfree.
